Diseases

Common diseases of Cairn and Silky Terriers

We have compiled a short listing of diseases related to the breeds we raise.  We have used many sources to gather our info and cannot claim that it will include all that are linked specifically to that breed.

Disease

GCL- Global Cell Leukodystrophy

This disease is caused by an enzyme deficiency that results in degeneration of nerve cells, it occurs in West Highland White Terriers and Cairn Terriers as well as other breeds. Signs are an unsteady gait, head tremors, nystagmus (rhythmic movement of the eyeballs) and blindness.

Disease

PK-Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency

This is an enzyme that is normally found in red blood cells. When the levels of this enzyme are deficient, the blood cells break down prematurely. This causes the dog to become anemic, exhibit a lack of energy, and low exercise tolerance.

Foundation

 The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals-OFA

The OFA databases are core to the organization’s objective of establishing control programs to lower the incidence of inherited disease.  Responsible breeders have an inherent responsibility to breed healthy dogs.  The OFA databases serve all breeds of dogs and cats, and provide breeders a means to respond to the challenge of improving the genetic health of their breed through better breeding practices.  The testing methodology and the criteria for evaluating the test results for each database were independently established by veterinary scientists from their respective specialty areas, and the standards used are generally accepted throughout the world. www.offa.org

The American Dog Owners Association preserves the special relationship between dogs and mankind by protecting and defending the rights of responsible dog ownership, opposing detrimental and supporting appropriate regulationfor dog owners; educating the public and promoting standards for safe and civilized treatment of dogs.

Since 1970, ADOA has been the voice of responsible dog owners and member dog clubs across the United States. ADOA has spoken and still speaks to legislators and in courts to protect rights of responsible dog owners and their dogs. ADOA's membership is composed of member dog clubs and individual dog-owner members representing responsible dog owners from all walks of life, from all over the United States.

ADOA is member-supported by local dog clubs, state-wide federations, and by individuals. Their support consists of their membership dues and donations towards the preservation of responsible dog ownership. www.adoa.org

Organization

National Alliance of Pet Owners-NAPO

Our Mission:

The National Alliance of Pet Owners, LLC (NAPO) was created for the purpose of Protecting, Promoting and Defending the Rights of responsible pet owners to be able to own and enjoy pets as granted by the U.S. Constitution. Many elements of our civilization are working to rob our American citizens and families of these rights today.

NAPO is a non-profit limited liability corporation (LLC). NAPO is dedicated to the public’s right to own, enjoy and reproduce pets as outlined in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Breeders, fanciers, owners, anyone concerned about pet ownership is encouraged to join! We have been closely following this organization from the beginning and believe in the mission of this organization.
