[Male or Female][Cairn Grooming Notes][We're Home Now What][Ex'pet'ations][Preparation][Glossary][When to call the vet][Crate Training][Choosing the right food][Spay or Neuter]
  • ______Food-Precise, Nutrisource Puppy or Royal Canin Small Breed 33 recommended and used here. Look at ingredient listing. Should have a meat base-chicken or lamb-preferably fresh.  Any corn or corn gluten should be lower on list and not the first ingredient, if present at all.
  • ______Brushes-see enclosed grooming instructions for list
  • ______Shampoo and Conditioner (for silky terrier).  I recommend  and use Bio Groom products available at www.kvvet.com or www.petedge.com
  • ______Dishes and waterer
  • ______Toys-be sure to watch toys carefully for damage from teeth. Pieces can cause intestinal upset and blockage.  Kong Toys are great for rough chewers.
  • ______Crate-for crate training. Either heavy plastic style or the more open wire style with cover for ‘den’ feeling. You may also invest in a puppy bed-but I will warn that puppies chew and they may ruin it fast. Be sure that it is not too large for crate training or it will defeat the purpose. May have to invest in a larger crate as the puppy grows to maturity.
  • Many want to invest in a bed also. Please keep in mind, that your puppy will chew and may ruin your investment.
  • ______Leash and collar. We recommend a harness if possible for starting puppies. Choke collars are acceptable if proper use-not recommended for silky terriers. Otherwise standard collar. Should be able to insert index and middle finger between collar and neck to start-may  have to adjust from there. Watch out for retractable leashes-have heard consumer reports of owner injury. Standard leash works best.  They do make leashes to hold more than one dog if you’ll be walking up to 3. See www.kvvet.com for more information.
  • _____Veterinarian-Find a vet that you can feel comfortable with.  Depending on your comfort level, select a vet that will allow you to be in the room for check ups and small procedures if you’d like.  It is best to find out beforehand what your clinic’s policy is on your involvement before you make your appointment. It is always good to know that if you’d like to be in the room, that they allow it-that way there is no confusion or disappointment. If you’d rather not, as sometimes it is best for the dog and also the owner, then find one that leaves the option open to you or prefers that you not be in the room. Also try to get a referral from a friend if this is the first time you will be visiting a vet.
  • _____Puppy Kindergarten-One of the biggest reasons that pets are forfeited to shelters or rehomed is for lack or training.  I recommend a puppy kindergarten class or even training at home with help of a good book.  Puppies cannot take long periods of training, so this is a minimal time effort each day to begin a lifetime with your pet.
  • _____Groomer-Begin grooming your pet at home immediately. It will make grooming easier for a groomer or for you down the road.  Grooming your pet at home is a wonderful way to bond if you feel up to the task. Be sure to continue to work with the feet and ears as they are sensitive areas for grooming. Encourage your pet to stand still for small amounts of time and increase each time.
  • ______Vaccinations, etc-You will receive a listing of all of the vaccinations, dewormings, etc we have given your puppy. Your vet may give a different type or recommend additional vaccinations for your area. You will also want his or her recommendations for heartworm preventative and flea and tick control.
